Where it started
When I joined, the app was stuck between versions. There was an old, early React Native app that was degrading, largely because of the API behind it. Documentation was sparse, and the whole thing needed a complete rethink.
A move to a Cordova-based app was already under way when I arrived, but it had a lot of flaws. In the end we rewrote the app completely in Flutter.
Flutter
The current app is built with Flutter. The learning curve was real. This was before AI, so it meant a lot of reading and experimenting. It paid off: we got a huge performance boost, and the design fidelity we needed to build a really nice UI.
Supporting every device
It wasn’t all smooth. Older Android devices were hard to support fully, and we kept running into limits across the huge range of devices and capabilities out there. The app now ships different variants depending on the device it’s running on.
